Why Is My Grinder Hard to Turn?

A grinder should turn smoothly. When it suddenly gets stiff, stuck, or gritty, it's almost always one of a few simple causes. Here's how to diagnose and fix it.

1. Residue buildup (most common)

Sticky resin and fine particles collect on the teeth and threads over time, gumming up the action. The fix is a quick clean — and it makes a huge difference.

2. You're overfilling it

Packing the chamber forces the teeth through too much material at once, which feels stiff and grinds unevenly.

3. Sticky or damp material

Very fresh or moist herb clings to everything and makes turning a chore.

Fix: make sure your material is properly dried before grinding. It'll turn easier and your screen will sift kief far better.

4. Stripped or cross-threaded threads

On cheaper grinders, the threads wear down or cross, so pieces bind. This is mostly a build-quality issue.

Fix: re-seat the threads gently (don't force). If they're worn out, it may be time to upgrade — quality grinders use smooth machined threads or a thread-less quarter-turn lock that never strips.

5. Grit between the threads

A stray particle in the threads can make the whole thing grind and catch.

Fix: unscrew fully, wipe the threads clean, and reassemble.

When it's just a cheap grinder
