How to Use a 4-Piece Grinder (Step-by-Step)

A good grinder is the difference between a clean, even grind and a sticky, uneven mess. If you just picked up a 4-piece grinder (sometimes called a 4-chamber or kief-catching grinder), this guide walks you through exactly how to use it — and how to start collecting that prized kief along the way.

The four pieces, explained

Before you grind, it helps to know what each part does. From top to bottom:

• The lid (cap): the magnetic top that holds everything closed while you grind.
• The grinding chamber: the teeth that do the work, plus holes in the floor that let ground material fall through.
• The collection chamber: where your fresh grind lands, with a fine mesh screen on the bottom.
• The kief catch: the very bottom chamber, where fine pollen (kief) sifts through the screen over time.

Step-by-step

1. Break it down and load the teeth. Pull off the lid and place small, pea-sized pieces between the teeth — not in the center hole, and don't overfill. A loosely filled chamber grinds far better than a packed one.
2. Cap it and grind. Put the lid back on (the magnet keeps it aligned) and turn it back and forth in quarter turns, about 10–15 rotations. Reversing direction occasionally keeps things from binding up.
3. Give it a tap. A light tap on the side helps everything fall through the holes into the collection chamber, so nothing clings to the teeth.
4. Open the middle chamber. Unscrew the grinding chamber to reveal your fresh, evenly ground material in the collection chamber, ready to use.

• Don't overfill. Less material = sharper, more even results and less strain on the teeth.
• Use a kief scraper. Drop a clean, smooth object (a small coin works) in the collection chamber to help knock more kief through the screen as you grind.
