How to Store Your Herb to Keep It Fresh

By Elevated Desert Co. · June 15, 2026

You can buy the best herb and grind it perfectly, but if it's stored badly it'll dry out, lose its aroma, and degrade fast. The good news: keeping it fresh comes down to controlling four things.

The four enemies of freshness

  • Light — UV breaks down potency faster than almost anything. Keep it in the dark.
  • Heat — warmth dries it out and degrades it. Store somewhere cool and stable.
  • Air — oxygen stales it over time. Limit headspace and exposure.
  • Humidity — too dry and it crumbles to dust; too damp and you risk mold.

The best way to store it

  1. Use an airtight glass jar. Glass doesn't hold odors or static the way plastic does, and a good seal keeps air out. Amber or opaque jars add light protection.
  2. Keep it cool and dark. A cupboard or drawer away from windows and appliances is ideal — not the fridge or freezer, where temperature swings and condensation cause problems.
  3. Control humidity. A small two-way humidity pack (aim for ~58–62%) keeps it perfectly cured without drying out.
  4. Right-size the jar. Less empty space = less air = fresher for longer.

Storing your kief

Kief is delicate — same rules, smaller scale. Keep it in a tiny airtight container, cool and dark, and don't crush it. (New to kief? Read what is kief.)

One more tip: grind fresh

Ground material has more surface area exposed to air, so it stales faster than whole. Store it whole and grind right before you use it — you'll taste the difference. A clean, sharp grinder like the Zenith makes that quick-grind effortless.
