2-Piece vs 4-Piece Grinder: Which Should You Get?

Shopping for a grinder and seeing "2-piece," "3-piece," "4-piece" everywhere? The number just refers to how many chambers (or parts) the grinder has — and it makes a real difference in what you get out of it. Here's a plain-English breakdown.

2-piece grinder

A lid and a base — that's it. You grind, and everything stays in the same chamber.

• Pros: compact, cheap, simple, fewer parts to clean.
• Cons: no screen, so you scoop your grind out by hand, and there's no kief collection.

3-piece grinder

Adds a second chamber below a set of fall-through holes, so ground material drops into a dedicated collection chamber. Still no kief catch.

• Pros: cleaner pour-out, keeps your grind separate.
• Cons: you still miss out on collecting kief.

4-piece grinder

The most popular choice. It has the lid, grinding chamber, a collection chamber with a fine mesh screen, and a fourth kief catch on the bottom where pollen sifts down over time.

• Pros: clean, even grind; separate collection; and it quietly builds up kief — the most potent part — as a bonus.

So which should you get?

For most people, a 4-piece grinder is the sweet spot. The kief catch alone makes it worth it, and the multi-chamber design gives you a cleaner, more consistent grind. Go 2-piece only if you want the most compact, bare-bones option and don't care about collecting kief.

One more thing that matters more than the piece count: build quality
